Las Mayas (Madrid)
La fiesta de los Mayos de Madrid, celebrada en el barrio de Lavapiés, era una antigua tradición consistente en que cada manzana, corrala o casa de vecinos elegía a una doncella y la colocaba en un altar engalanado con flores. Representaba y celebraba la llegada de la primavera. Las amigas de la maya solicitaban dinero a los viandantes para celebrar luego una fiesta en honor de la misma. Con el tiempo se terminaron produciendo tumultos, hubo algunas prohibiciones y la tradición terminó por perderse.
Hace unos años se recuperó esta tradición en el barrio y decidí hacer algunas fotografías de tan colorida y singular tradición.
The festival of the Mays of Madrid, celebrated in the Lavapiés neighborhood, was an ancient tradition consisting in that each block, corrala or tenement house chose a maiden and placed her on an altar adorned with flowers. It represented and celebrated the arrival of spring. The friends of the Maya asked passersby for money to later celebrate a party in honor of it. Over time they ended up producing riots, there were some prohibitions and the tradition ended up being lost.
A few years ago this tradition was recovered in the neighborhood and I decided to take some photographs of such a colorful and unique tradition.
